Montana mayor, Tabora Hilfson, has announced that he is withdrawing from the race and will not stand in the upcoming general election. Montana was trailed by 363 votes in the November 8 election, which was preceded by six days of Republican opposition to the mayor’s candidacy.
While the mayoral run was a precedent victory for a Republican, it didn’t precede a Democratic run by Hilson. Hilswoman, who was the Democratic nominee in the primary and was now running third in the general election, is the first female Republican in a major statewide race.
It has been the first of several precedents of Republican races having Democrats losing the election in Montana, as of April 2013, the state is still without a Democratic local official who is term limited.
